The Long Island Power Authority and Iroquois Gas Transmission System L.P. are proposing to build a new natural gas pipeline, the Brookhaven Lateral Project, dangerously close to local residences and schools.
The proposed 24-inch diameter gas pipe is to be buried only 3 feet below the ground and will be located, in our area, underneath the LIPA high tension wires which run north of, and parallel to, the Long Island Expressway.
This route brings the pipeline far too close to homes and schools such as St. Joseph’s, Hiawatha, and Nokomis.
In Iroquois’ original proposal the preferred route for the pipeline was along the Long Island Expressway, away from houses and schools, but because Iroquois considered the regulatory requirements for that route to be burdensome, they subsequently proposed a route utilizing the LIPA’s right-of-way under the high tension wires.
The Civic’s Executive Board opposes the route currently being proposed by the Long Island Power Authority and Iroquois Gas. A natural gas pipeline of this magnitude does not belong under local public streets, adjacent to homes and schools where it presents an unnecessary and avoidable risk to residents and school children. LIPA and Iroquois Gas should be ashamed for acting so irresponsibly by changing the preferred route and putting residents at risk just to avoid red tape.
