Autumn is one of the most colorful seasons of the
year with its leaves of red, yellows and browns. To
some it could mean a time of fresh starts or new
beginnings. Perhaps something that the crisp winds
bring into the environment around us.
One new beginning we have this autumn within the Lake Ronkonkoma community is the commencement of a Citizen of the Year Award given by the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization and sponsored by Concerned Care Services, Inc.
One new beginning we have this autumn within the Lake Ronkonkoma community is the commencement of a Citizen of the Year Award given by the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization and sponsored by Concerned Care Services, Inc.
The citizen of the year for 2006 is Mrs. Emma
Bruno. Mrs. Bruno has been a steadfast pillar of
the Lake Ronkonkoma community for over 50 years.
Her generosity through philanthropy and
volunteerism has set the standard for future
citizens to be recognized.
Mrs. Bruno has had a long life on Long Island. She was born and raised in Central Islip and later moved to Lake Ronkonkoma with her husband Louis and, at 20 years old, had a daughter. Her family originally sold and delivered ice and coal. They also founded Bruno’s Beverage Center. Mrs. Bruno drove a school bus as well. So she was busy on call 24/7 to drive buses and provide service at the beverage center. Another business venture Mrs. Bruno was involved in was a tavern called “Bruno’s”. All this work was overwhelming, so eventually they sold the tavern to her husband’s brother, but the beverage center remained a part of her life.
Mrs. Bruno became an active member of the Lake Ronkonkoma Homemakers Club, the Friends of Sachem Public Library Club, the Lake Ronkonkoma Senior Citizen Club, the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society and the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization. Mrs. Bruno has baked, gardened and is known to share her vast knowledge of Lake Ronkonkoma history for these organizations and for citizens of Lake Ronkonkoma for over 50 years.
Mrs. Bruno’s husband passed away in 1991. She had only the one daughter who has also passed away and has five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Now at 91 years young, some of her most interesting experiences while living in Lake Ronkonkoma were when her husband would bring home anyone who happened to be stranded at the lake and needed a place to stay.
Congratulations to a great lady in the Lake Ronkonkoma community who deserves the 2006 Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization’s Citizen of the Year Award.
