Sachem School Board Meeting, November 15 2017

The Sachem School Board held a routine meeting this past Wednesday, November 15. Board meetings follow a standard agenda which includes a Superintendent’s discussion, a Presentation, Board actions, and public comment:
  • The Superintendent’s discussion covers current events in the district.
  • The Presentation varies at each meeting and covers various subjects of interest to the Board and the Community.
  • The Board actions mostly include contract approvals and personnel transactions.
  • The public comment section is an opportunity for community members to raise issues they want the Board and Administration to address.
The Presentation at this week’s meeting was about a major initiative to revise the current Code of Conduct. The current Code of Conduct was developed many years ago and is broadly viewed as out of date. The new Code of Conduct is almost complete, and will be presented to the Board shortly for approval.

The Administration advised that their work on the Code of Conduct is only the first step in the overall process. They also need to develop a strategy and tactics to roll out the Code of Conduct to students, the administration and parents. Then they need to create a strategy for dealing with students who don’t comply with the Code of Conduct.

The Board was quite vocal about the importance of making sure that the non-compliance strategy be fair, address students with different needs appropriately, keep all personnel safe, and support the overall Sachem goal of helping our students grow.

School Board meetings are often informative and the public is invited to attend. The current meeting schedule may be found at this link.  Scroll down and look at “Upcoming Events” on the left side.  The next meeting is on December 6 at 7:30 PM at Samoset Middle School, in the Board Room.  We strongly encourage Sachem residents to attend these meetings.  The Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization often has a representative at the meetings to report back to membership on the business of the Sachem School District.
