Public Hearing for Ronkonkoma Hub - February 7, 2017

There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, February 7th at 2:30PM in the Legislative Auditorium of the W.H. Rogers Building (located at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Smithtown, NY 11787) regarding the proposed expansion of the Southwest Sewer District (Suffolk County Sewer District No. 3) to support the Ronkonkoma Hub development.

The proposal was originally presented at a public hearing last year, but was not voted on by the Legislature due to concern it was not clearly expressed this would come at no cost to the taxpayer. These improvements will be paid for using Sewer District Serial Bonds and a grant from the Empire State Development Corporation, with contributions from the developer of the Ronkonkoma Hub. The expansion of the Southwest Sewer District will provide sewage treatment to previously un-sewered areas, creating a favorable ecological and economic impact to the County, and allowing for the construction of an asset within the District that has the ability to generate revenue and future cost savings to District rate payers.

This hearing is critical to the redevelopment of the Ronkonkoma Hub.  The County Legislature is deciding on the appropriations for the pump station.

This issue has recently become "political" and if the appropriations are not approved, then the entire project is at risk.  The project requires proper sewering to move forward.

It would be helpful if community members in favor of project attend the hearing and state their support of the project and relay how important it is to redevelop the blighted area around the train station.
