Creating the Future from your Vision

Inside this month's issue of the newsletter you will
find a full-page poster (see below) with information
about a meeting on Wednesday, October 14th, at 7:00
pm, at the Ronkonkoma Fire District Community
Building on the northeast corner of Portion Road and
Hawkins Avenue. For those of you who have been
involved in our community-based planning process,
this meeting is the moment you’ve been expecting –
when we take the community’s vision and turn it into
a formal Land Use Plan.
Five years ago, in response to community concern about the future of Portion Road and the central business district in Lake Ronkonkoma, residents and business owners came together in October 2004 for a multi-day Visioning process. During the Visioning, attendees had the opportunity to discuss what they enjoyed about their community, what they disliked, and what they wanted to see in the future. Since that time, the Civic and the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce have been working with planners and consultants from the Town of Brookhaven to create a plan for the future of Lake Ronkonkoma and the Portion Road corridor.
The Land Use Plan will provide guidance and assistance to commercial property owners so they understand the community's expectations and visions for the business districts along Portion Road, from Ronkonkoma Avenue to Nicolls Road. The land use plan will also offer economic incentives to help reduce suburban sprawl and revitalize the central business districts near Ronkonkoma Avenue and Hawkins Avenue, and the Morris Avenue Center near Nicolls Road. The short and long term benefits of this land use plan are really too extensive to list here, but there will be ample opportunity for Lake Ronkonkoma residents and business owners to learn more and offer their input at the meeting on October 14th.
Community planning efforts such as this one require the participation and input from community members in order to succeed. Your vision of Lake Ronkonkoma was our starting point and this Land Use Plan can help make it a reality, but only with your continued participation. Join us on October 14th and see what the future can hold.
