Illegal Housing
Aug 10, 2008 Filed in: General
Announcements
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, Department of
Social Services (DSS) Chief Deputy Commissioner Greg
Blass and Legislator Kate Browning outlined new
legislation combating illegal, overcrowded housing.
Town supervisors and village mayors will now be able
to submit to DSS a list of 10 housing units at a time
that are in violation of regulations. If any of those
dwellings are home to public assistance recipients,
the property owners will be given 20 days to
remediate those violations. If all violations are not
remedied within 20 days, DSS will work with any
willing public assistance recipients at those
residences to identify alternative housing.
